HSK 1 character list: how many do you need?

The honest answer is that it depends which HSK you mean. The standard changed in 2021, and most lists online still quote the old numbers.

The short answer

If you are studying for the exam, check which version your test centre uses. If you are learning for life rather than a certificate, aim at the HSK 3.0 number: 300 characters is the point where simple sentences stop being a puzzle.

Reading versus writing

These are different skills with very different costs. Recognising 谢 when you see it is quick. Producing it stroke by stroke on blank paper takes several times longer to learn.

HSK 1 is typically taken on a computer or as multiple choice, so handwriting is not tested. That does not make it useless, writing practice is one of the cheapest ways to stop similar characters blurring into each other, but it does mean you should not let handwriting slow your reading progress.

What the first 300 actually cover

The list is not random. It is built around the things a beginner needs in their first conversations: greetings and politeness, numbers and dates, family members, food and drink, places, weather, and the handful of verbs that carry most sentences - 是, 有, 去, 吃, 喜欢.

You also meet the grammatical particles that make Chinese work: 的 for possession, 吗 to turn a statement into a question, 了 for completed actions. These are high-value characters, a handful of them unlock hundreds of sentences.

How to work through the list

1. Do not study the list alphabetically. Learning characters in isolation is how people end up knowing 300 characters and being unable to say anything.
2. Group by topic. Learn the family words together, the numbers together. Related items reinforce each other.
3. Learn words, not just characters. 中 and 国 are two characters; 中国 is one useful word.
4. Review on a schedule. At 300 items, memory decay outruns enthusiasm within a fortnight.

How many words are in HSK 1?

HSK 2.0 lists 150 words. HSK 3.0 Level 1 lists around 500 words built from roughly 300 characters.

Do I need to pass HSK 1 before HSK 2?

No, the levels are independent and many learners skip straight to a higher level. HSK 1 is mainly useful as a milestone and a structure.
