How to study for the HSK 1 exam

HSK 1 is a deliberately gentle exam: no handwriting, pinyin printed above every character, and a pass mark you can hit with two months of daily study.

What the exam actually contains

SectionItemsTimeWhat it tests
Listening20~15 minPictures, matching, short exchanges
Reading20~17 minCharacter-picture matching, sentence completion

Total is about 40 minutes including instructions. Each section is scored out of 100 and the pass mark is 120 out of 200. Under HSK 2.0 the vocabulary is 150 words; under HSK 3.0 the Level 1 list is larger, around 500 words and 300 characters. Pinyin appears above the characters throughout, and there is no writing section.

An eight-week plan from zero

  1. Week 1, sound only. Pinyin initials, finals, the four tones. No character memorisation yet. End the week able to read any pinyin syllable aloud.
  2. Weeks 2–3, first 100 characters. Greetings, numbers, family, pronouns. Start reviews immediately; do not batch them.
  3. Weeks 4–5, to 200 characters, plus sentence patterns: 是, 有, 在, question particle 吗, and the 的 possessive.
  4. Week 6, to 300 characters and daily listening. This is where the listening section is won.
  5. Week 7, consolidate. No new material. Clear every review, drill the words you keep failing.
  6. Week 8, mock exams. Two or three timed papers. Practise the pace; the questions are easier than the clock.

How to know you are ready

Two signals. You can score above 80% on a timed mock without pausing the audio, and your review queue is stable rather than growing. If the second is not true, the first is fragile.

Doing this in BaoBao Talk

The 28 units are the HSK 1 syllabus in the order above: sound first, then characters in themed groups, with sentence building and a conversation in every unit. Reviews are scheduled automatically, so week 7 is a matter of clearing what is due rather than deciding what to revise. Each unit ends with a multiple-choice test in the same shape as the exam's reading and listening questions, including audio-only items.

Common questions

Is HSK 1 hard?

It is the easiest level and designed to be passable after roughly 80 to 150 hours of study. There is no handwriting and pinyin is printed throughout.

How much does the HSK 1 exam cost?

Fees vary by country and test centre, typically in the range of 15 to 30 US dollars for Level 1. Check your nearest official centre.

Should I take HSK 1 at all?

If you need a certificate for study or work, yes. Otherwise it is mainly useful as a deadline and a structure, many learners skip straight to HSK 3.
